SBMS cares about our students!

Attendance is the #1 way to be successful in school. When students are in school every day, they have more opportunities to learn and grow. If students are often absent, it's harder for them to stay on track. Every day of school counts towards your child's journey of growth and discovery. Chronic absence (attending less than 90%) is defined as missing more than 17 days a year—or just about 2 days a month – even if those absences are excused!

The first bell rings at 8:50 AM, and classes begin at 9:00 AM. Students need to be in their assigned seats when the bell rings. If your student must be absent for medical appointments or due to illness, please call SBMS attendance line at 541-790-8325 within 48 hours to excuse the absence.

Being present when information is delivered is critical. When your child misses one day or one lesson, that means when they return to school, they may have missed something critical to their understanding of the next several days of instruction. Consistently attending school helps students stay on track and feel confident in their progress. When students are present and they're actively engaged in their learning journey, this boosts their motivation and eagerness to return to school each day.

All SBMS students and families are welcome to come to SBMS September 1st from 3:00-6:00 to pick up schedules, check out and practice new lockers, and for families to leave an encouraging first day of school message in chalk on our sidewalk!

The first day of school for 6th graders will be 9/8/2026 (9:00-3:40). The school opens daily at 8:00, and students report directly to the cafeteria for breakfast or to the gym. Lunch is provided. 

Our fantastic sixth grade first day is all about getting our sixth graders connected and comfortable with SBMS! Students will learn how to navigate the school, where their classes are, practice with their lockers, and meet their teachers. During their day, they will be led by teachers and Supersonic Spartan leaders. The Supersonic Spartan program builds positive relationships while helping 6th graders transition to middle school. Supersonic Spartan leaders are positive role models who want our new students to succeed.

All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are in class on 9/9/2026 (9:00 AM-2:35 PM).

The school opens daily to students at 8:00 AM. After the building doors open, students report directly to the cafeteria for breakfast or they may gather with friends out front or in the front hall until the bell rings at 8:50 A.M.

All students should bring their school supplies and be ready to start their day, seated in class at 9:00.

SBMS Office Hours are 8:00-4:00. Doors open to students each day at 8:00 and breakfast is available 8:30 AM-8:50 AM. Classes begin at 9:00 each day of the week. Classes end at 2:35 PM on Wednesdays and 3:40 PM all other days of the week. For a detailed schedule, please visit the SBMS website and click on “Bell Schedule.”

All students (Grades 6-8) have the optional opportunity to come to SBMS to pick up their class schedules on Tuesday, September 1^st between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM for our Ice Cream Social event.

• 6^th graders who do not pick up their schedules at the Ice Cream Social will receive their schedules on their first day of school, September 8^th.
• 7^th and 8^th graders who do not pick up their schedules at the Ice Cream Social will be given their schedules on their first day of school (9/9) in the school lobby.

SBMS doors open at 8:00. We encourage all students to bike, walk, or carpool to school. State law dictates that all students under age 16 must wear a helmet when riding bikes, using inline skates, skateboards, or scooters. Students who repeatedly do not wear a helmet on campus will be restricted from bringing wheeled modes of transportation onto campus grounds. If your child needs assistance obtaining a helmet or lock, please contact the school office at 541-790-8300.

In the State of Oregon, 16 years is the minimum age to ride an ebike or escooter. For more information about electric bike and scooters, Click here for information from the Eugene Police Department. A decision about possible restrictions on ebikes and escooters from campus is being considered.

A covered bike, skateboard, and scooter area is available for students in front of the building. Please lock and secure these items at all times. Always use the crosswalks and bike paths when traveling to and from school. Students are expected to walk their wheels while on campus.

Free Bus Passes
All 4J students are entitled to a free, annual transit pass from Lane Transit District (LTD) with a $200+ value. Passes are available in the office.

Eugene School District 4J is committed to supporting student learning by providing healthy, nutritious meals every school day.

Changes to School Meals

Through the 2026–27 school year, all enrolled 4J students may receive one complete breakfast and one complete lunch each school day at no charge.

Additional purchases—including seconds and extra milk—will be charged to the student's meal account according to the current Nutrition Services price list. Families may add funds to a student's meal account or receive a monthly billing statement for these additional purchases.

At SBMS we have a morning break where students can get breakfast. A change from last year is that students can only have 1 free breakfast and one free lunch. So if they eat a school breakfast before school, they would be charged if they had a second breakfast during morning break. They would not be charged if they do not have breakfast before school.

Student Meal Accounts

Every student has a Nutrition Services meal account. While one breakfast and one lunch are provided at no charge each school day, additional purchases—including second meals, second entrées, extra milk, and à la carte items—will be charged to the student's meal account.

Families can:

• Add funds to a student's meal account.
• Monitor account balances and purchases.
• Receive monthly billing statements for outstanding balances.

Menus & Nutrition Information

Weekly breakfast and lunch menus are available through LINQ Connect.

Families can:

• Select their student's school.
• View daily breakfast and lunch menus.
• See nutrition facts and carbohydrate counts.
• Filter menu items by allergens and dietary preferences.
• View ingredient information for menu items.

Meal Accommodations

Nutrition Services offers meal accommodations for students with medically documented disabilities or dietary needs.

Depending on the student's needs, either a Meal Preference Form or a Medical Statement to Request Special Meals and/or Accommodations may be required.

Picture day is Friday, September 25th. All students will have their picture taken, even if they are not purchasing pictures, as the photo is used by the school and for the yearbook. Students who would like to purchase photos will need to return their picture envelopes, with payment inside, on the day of photos OR they may order online before picture day.

Paper packets and information about ordering photos online will be provided once the school receives the info from Lifetouch.

Cell phones, smart watches (even in school mode), earbuds/headphones, and all personal electronic devices are to be off and in student lockers at all times during the school day - including lunch and break. This includes but is not limited to smartphones, web-enabled flip phones, cellularcapable tablets and e-readers, smartwatches, smart glasses, and connected headphones or earbuds.

Cell phones may be brought to school, but must be turned off and placed in the student's locker until the conclusion of the school day. Students may use the front office phone and a private space to call or text can be provided if the student needs to contact home voice call or text on their own device.

Please do not text or call students on personal devices during the instructional day. If families need to communicate with students during the school day, please call the office (541-790-8300).

Any student using an electronic device in an unsafe, disruptive, or inappropriate way will be sent to the school administration and their device may be held in the office. Examples include using technology to harass others, taking photos or videos without consent, to cheat on assignments, and sharing/posting inappropriate content. See below for more details about school response to personal electronic device use at school.

• Level 1 – Minor Misuse: Verbal reminder, reteaching, and correction of storage procedures.
• Level 2 – Repeated Misuse: Device held until the end of the day; family notification; adjusted storage supports.
• Level 3 – Defiant or Disruptive Misuse: Office pickup, student–family conference, and technology contract.

SBMS does not have mandatory school fees. Parents can choose to purchase a yearbook ($20.00 - scholarships available) or make a monetary donation. Payments for yearbooks can be made online via this link, by sending a check or cash to SBMS via the mail, or in person.
